Heat Recovery (HRV) or Energy Recovery (ERV) ventilation systems work in conjunction with your heating and cooling systems. HRV systems are designed for less humid climates of southern Australia. ERV systems are designed for humid climates of northern Australia by addressing humidity as well.
There are two types available:
Opening windows for ventilation creates significant heat loss / gain. The greater the difference between the outside ambient and inside set temperatures, the greater the heat loss / gain. Heat loss / gain also occurs via convection currents from air gaps in your external walls, ceilings, floors doors and windows.
In heating or cooling climates, you can expect about one third of your heating or cooling to be lost through open windows and air gaps, so clearly there is a great opportunity to save operating costs.
HRV systems recover up to 94% and of your heating or cooling energy from the outgoing stale air and transfer that to the incoming fresh air.
These systems are very important in highly efficient, air tight homes to reduce carbon dioxide and humidity build up from household activity. They provide ventilation without losing or gaining heat from opening windows.
A good supply of fresh air improves alertness and makes a healthier, fresher indoor environment.
